Here is part of Dave’s post on Bush today:

Will we survive George Bush? Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Every time George Bush opens his mouth I think of how many Americans are going to have to die to pay for that gaffe, and how many billions it’s going to cost us to dig out of all the messes he’s already created and the ones he’s yet to create.

Dave, dude, he is just to inept to be responsible for all of this. He’s like a puppet. There is a legion of people and reasons that this is happening, Bush is just the scapegoat. If he were that competent, he wouldn’t be doing this stuff in the first place.

Closing Letter to the Copyright Industry Associations of America :: The Big Hack :: On Copyrightable Numbers with an application to the gesetzklageproblem

August 14, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Here it is, the DRM gauntlet has been thrown down…It makes me giggle. These people have never met a lawyer.

Closing letter to
the Copyright Industry Associations of America
from
the Digital Douwd

Attention:

Mark today on your calendar! They will need it for your obituary. Today is the day our future began and your future ended.

For three years now you have pursued your lawsuit campaign. Twenty thousand plus consumers, a dozen companies, and several very prominent friends of ours have fallen victim to your charade. We hoped you would see the obvious foolishness of your ways. Now, however, it appears clear that your shenanigans have gone on too long—You have begun deposing bereaved families of the deceased.

This can not stand. This will not stand. You will not stand. And from this day forward, your manipulative copyright claims will have no standing.

Today is the day we end all of your problems with consumer copyright infringement. For from today forward, consumers have no need for copies, infringing or otherwise. One common copy is all that is needed. One copy for everyone. Accessible forever.

Today we announce a massively distributed copy-less file system. A place where all content is available instantly, anonymously and to everyone, without breaking any laws. Today we announce the Owner-Free File System. An island of sanity in your sea of madness.

Feel free to monitor OFF’s communications. You’ll find no copying. Subpoena a few servers. You’ll find nothing that belongs to you. Only bits of randomness. This new internet infrastructure is truly a place without ownership. Nobody owns the OFF System. Nobody owns bits of randomness collected in the OFF System. There is beauty in randomness. As with all things beautiful, randomness’ value lies in the eye of the beholder. There is no intrinsic meaning in randomness but an infinite amount of extrinsic value. And behold that value we will.

This is not a threat. This is not a negotiation. This is the future—A future with no one to sue.

Adapt or die.

Correction–Livewriter is not Onfolio

August 14, 2006 · Leave a Comment

I was trying to make Onfolio auto-post to WordPress. I used the suggested mechanisms recommended by Onfolio but I couldn’t make it work.

I posted a request for some help on the Onfolio help forum. I later got a response that Livewriter fixed a lot auto-post problems for Onfolio.

The way the response was worded, I assumed that Onfolio development had stopped and that Livewriter had replaced Onfolio.

I then received another reply on the forum that made it clear that Onfolio and Livewriter were two different things.

New comment on your post #7 “New Version of Onfolio dubbed Livewriter”

Comment:
Just to clarify, Writer doesn’t replace Onfolio, as it’s only used for writing blog posts–there’s no web clipping, RSS reading, or anything else that Onfolio does. Writer is a new and different product that just happens to come from the same team that brought you Onfolio. :)

I subsequently listened to the podcast interview of JJ Allaire–founder of Onfolio–and he mentioned that a new version of Onfolio is going to come out. (Sorry, I can’t find the link to the podcast just now.)

I am happy about that. I have worked out a way to use Onfolio and Livewriter that is slick. Not as nice as just clicking on an icon in the Onfolio newspaper but pretty close.

windows live writer plugins: flickr and tagging

August 14, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Wow, as promised, two plugins for Livewriter. I will test them presently.

windows live writer plugins: flickr and tagging

okay, codeplex projects approved!  i’ve just uploaded the plugins (binary setups and source) for the two plugins i wrote for windows live writer.

here’s a brief description of them.

Tag4Writer
A *very simple* content source plugin for enabling quick insert of formatted tags using a URL template.  This one is simple and could be converted to a smart content source for better usability.
Codeplex Project: Tag4Writer

Flickr4Writer
A simple content source for browsing/inserting images from Flickr services.  Enter a user name, click search and view pictures.  Currently does not support uploading (hoping that another extensible model from Writer will enable that, but could also be done here).
Codeplex Project: Flickr4Writer

these are both using the MS-PL license model (review the license tabs on the project).  please contribute, please make them better.  read the home page to join the project.

digg – Do a background check on anyone in America.

This looks scary. What a service.

Do a background check on anyone in America.

Teague submitted by Teague 17 hours 8 minutes ago (via http://www.peoplelookup.com/)

Phone numbers, addresses, criminal history, property history, average income for every location they’ve lived in – even reverse phone number searching. Creepy, and accurate.

Freelancers: Never Rely On A Single Income Source | Performancing.com

Freelancing is the way to go…and it sucks.

Submitted by Raj Dash on August 13, 2006 – 1:09am in Performancing Exchange

So. You’re a serious blogger now because you secured your first blogging client. Seasoned freelancers know about the 80/20 rule: the bulk (80%) of your revenue will come from the least number (20%) of your clients. It’s sometimes called the 70/30 rule.

However, Chris Anderson, editor of Wired and author of the Long Tail book and website, says that the Internet turns the rule on its head for some types of digital media, in specific situations, thus giving certain content more sales life. Or at least, that’s my interpretation.

But the fact is, in any business, it’s generally easier to secure repeat clients than get new ones. But unless you (1) are a very disciplined saver, (2) have great faith in your biggest clients, or (3) have a partial stake in a venture, you probably do not want to rely on a single blogging client.

The Internet, and services like this new bloggers-for-hire/ Exchange community that Nick and the P-boys have set up, will give you a a better chance at finding more clients. But in practice, at least initially in your blogging career, you may not have a lot of choice about the number of clients. That’s mainly because blogging for pay is a relatively new phenomenon. So you have to consider alternate income sources.

Blogging/ writing monetizing options include running affiliate programs on your own sites or writing your own articles on the topics you are writing for clients. (With contextual or CPA/ CPM ads.)

Finally, take it from me. If you’ve never been a freelancer before, and are planning on relying entirely on your blogging skills to earn a living, learn how to budget. Save your extra money in an interest-bearing bank account – say an online savings account. If you have a banner year, and have the wherewithal to invest in stocks or mutual funds, you might consider that as well. Because pools do dry up sometimes, here are some important freelancing tips. [via MediaBistro]

P.S. MediaBistro, a great resource site for freelance writers, has a short article about negotiating your way to greater pay. The rates apply to print articles, but the advice applies to blog writers as well. Just keep in mind that at this stage, blogs and websites, on average, do not generate enough ad revenue to pay the same kind of rates. There is an immense difference, unless you’re copyblogging, which will require crack writing skills.

It will be fun to see what plug-ins show up.

Windows Live Writer Plugins Coming Soon!

Published by Sidebar Geek August 13th, 2006

Tim at the Method ~ of ~ failed blog has posted plans to publish two awesome plugins for Windows Live Writer. He’s designed a Flickr Plugin for your Flickr pictures and a Technorati plugin for Technorati tags. I can’t wait to get a hold of these.

Tim says in his comments to the post he’s finishing up some things on the plugins and should be releasing them in some fashion. I’d keep an eye out on his blog for details of their release.

Thanks to Mike Torres for the heads up on this.
